Spring & Scraps

Hi everyone...it's Deb and I am next up with the challenge!! This one started out with a little inspiration from Nichol Magouirk, specifically her die cut hearts using ribbon scraps (which you can check out here). Then as I was making the card and finding myself using a bunch of lighter, spring colors, I figured we could make this challenge the Spring & Scraps challenge. Here's the card I put together...

We've all got those ribbon scraps hanging around our crafty space, so why not use them up!! I layered a few different pieces onto some cardstock, then die cut them (I've done this with PTI dies without any problems). I used the Simple Circles border die and stamp set across the bottom and chose colors to coordinate with my ribbon scraps, which happened to all be very spring like colors if you ask me. Finished up the card with a birthday sentiment from Simple Sentiments (can never have too many birthday cards here) and a button tied with baker's twine adhered to my die cut shape.

So there's the challenge...use up those ribbon scraps or make a card using light, pastel, spring colors...or for extra credit, do both!! Since Spring is hopefully right around the corner (for those of us in the northern hemisphere anyway) I figured this is a good way to break those winter blues.

The Maybe Next Time Challenge

Hi there, it's Kay. My turn to host the challenge, and I've got something a bit different. You don't even have to make a new project!
Most of us at one time or another have submitted a project for publication, with, shall we say, less than stellar results.
In my opinion, it takes a lot of courage to submit a project, you're putting yourself out there with the possibility of being rejected and all..... Or maybe that's just my fragile ego :-).
So, your challenge is to share one (or more, if you wish) of those projects that was not selected for publication.
If by chance you haven't submitted anything for publication, perhaps you have something that you thought about submitting, but missed the deadline, lost your nerve, didn't get around to it, whatever the reason, feel free to share that project.

Clean and Simple

I recently took the Clean and Simple course at OnlineCardClasses.com and thought I would carry the theme over to the new Papertrey Playhouse challenge.

The Challenge: Create a card using only 3 decorative elements, not including the card base (or sentiment, if applicable).

For my card, I used a strip of patterned paper, a Spellbinders die and a pearl heart.

Die Cut Negatives

We're back to challenges for the new year and to kick off I have a simple card with a technique I'm calling Die Cut Negative. Actually, it's just an opening cut in a card front using a die. I'm sure there's a better term for it but I'm sticking with mine :)

Here's my card:

I used Mat Stack 1 to cut my opening and then stamped the snowman from Friendship Jar Holiday Fillers in the opening. He was stamped a second time on white, cut out and paper pieced. To the front of the card, I stamped the dangly snowflake image a couple of times across the top edge of the card using white ink. Patterned paper is from the Happy Spots pack. I hand cut the rolling hills from the paper and machine stitched them to the card, with the top edge of the hills overlapping my window cut out a little.

A little prisma glitter on the flakes (and inside the card on the snowballs at the base of the snowman) finishes off this card - ready to send to a friend on a cold, snowy day.

So the challenge is to use a die and create an opening of some sort on your card. It doesn't necessarily have to be a window for an image to look through - you might use an image die and back it from inside the card with patterned paper. Play around and see what you can come up with and then link up here.

Faux Mass Production

I don't like to mass produce cards. There, I said it. Four is about my limit before I start to get bored with it. Certainly, I understand the value of mass production, assembly line style is a great way to save time. That's just not fun for me, though, and since making cards is supposed to be fun.....
Well anyway, here's one way I use the benefits of mass production and the creative fun of unique cards to help me get my Christmas cards done. Forgive the hokey title, I didn't know what else to call it. {grin}

Hre's the card that I started with. It's a nice traditional card, with a layout that was easy (and fun) to change around. I made two of these; I can do cards in pairs without getting bored. {grin again}
So, if you're like me, you have all different sorts of people on your Christmas card list, and as a result, they have preferences for traditional, or whimsical, or vintage, or whatever.
By changing just the colors on the card above, I made another pair of cards in non-traditional colors.:

Keeping the same layout, I changed out the colors, the diecut word, and the ribbon, to create a pair of vintage cards, as shown in the next photo:

Just as a side note on the above card, "peace" was cut from felt instead of cardstock, to help with the vintage feel.
One more time, for the people that prefer a more rustic card- again, just changing out colors and an embellishment or two. I made a pair of these also.

From this one basic layout, I got four styles of cards, a total of eight cards completed, and even I managed to complete these in one day.
If you've managed to make it all the way through this, I'm assuming you're ready for your challenge.

Start with a design you love, whether it's a new creation, or one of your favorites from your stash that you just can't bear to part with. Then, just change out colors or whatever, keeping the same basic layout. Have FUN with it, that is ultimately what it's all about.
One more thing- if you happened to have finished your Christmas cards (and if you have, give yourself a big pat on the back), feel free to try this on any other type of card.

Hi all - time for me to post a new challenge!

I thought since the holidays are a time for parties and get-togethers, creating an invitation would be a timely challenge.

Here is one I created:

I used a few different sets to create this scene. The snowflakes are from Winter Swirls, the door is from Home Made, the trees are from the Friendship Jar Holiday Fillers and finally the tiny "you're invited" is from Tiny Tags. Everything was colored with Copics and the door panels were distressed with the clear blender Copic to create a wood-like texture in the coloring.

I have another invitation posted at Moments of Your Heart using the Table Service set.

Season of Changes

Hello! It's Victoria here with the next challenge. I don't know about you, but Fall is my favorite season. I love the colors of the turning leaves, the smells, the fading light, the crisp air--everything. I also love the Halloween and Thanksgiving holidays that Fall welcomes, and the sense of anticipation that Christmas will soon follow.

As I was contemplating what I would do for this challenge, I decided to pay a visit to Pinterest. Although I got an invite for it months ago, I have yet to set it up, so I was really happy to see that I could still browse the images without having to go ahead and finalize my log in! I decided to search for Fall/Autumn, and this is one of the images that came up:

It's titled "First Snowfall in Duluth." I just thought it was really pretty, and provides the perfect depiction of changing seasons. Your challenge is relatively straightforward: make a project for fall or winter. If you're like me and not quite ready to let go of Fall yet, you can make something for the harvest season. Or, if you're really on top of things and ready to move into the holiday season, go for it and knock a card or other project off your list!

It's quite possible that you HAVE used them all, so you can, alternatively, use one that hasn't seen love in awhile.

Month-Long Use-It Challenge! Weeks 1 & 2: Stamps

Hello there and welcome to another Papertrey Playhouse challenge!

Dana here with the first of 2 "use it" challenges that will encourage us to USE those dusty Papertrey items! I don't just mean items that haven't been used in awhile. I mean those items that have NEVER been used!

It's a crying shame, really... We spend all that money on those fabulous gotta-have-'em stamps and then get swept up in the next PTI release before we even use the stamps we just got!

This isn't a unique challenge idea... I've played in stuff like this before. I determined, however, that I had used at least one stamp from 85% of my PTI stamp sets (not too bad, if you ask me!) and I'd really like to take care of that last 15%...

This project managed to use 2 never-before-used stamp sets: Bundle of Love and Mini Scrapbook Series: Tabs. The sentiment had also never been used before (Bitty Baby Blessings). My cloud stamps, however, have had plenty of use! (You can get more details on my card here.)

Although multiples occur more frequently nowadays, this is my first time getting to make a card for twins! So excited!

Now, if you actually have used every PTI stamp you own, then fabulous! (But seriously?? Every stamp in every stamp set?!? ;) ) As an alternative, you can give an old set some love.

So, you have two weeks to ink up stamps from a set that has never been used! After that time, I'll have one more "use it" challenge. (Hope you don't get tired of me; I'm just filling in a gap in the schedule... ;) )

Same Tag Challenge

One of my favorite columns in various magazines has always been seeing what people with different creative styles do with the same products. So often I see something that makes me go "I wouldn't have thought of that!" and I really like the result. I chose to use this same idea for our latest challenge.

I managed to create similar tags for everyone in the group (did you notice your tag featured your favorite color?) and even mailed them out early so they'd arrive in time for this challenge. I was so proud of myself for thinking ahead. And I just realized I didn't take any pictures or scans of a single one of them before they were embellished. *sigh* It's always something. :) Hopefully we'll have several participants so you can get an idea of the "base" item everyone had to work with.

Each group member received a manilla tag, with stitching around the the edge. An original Friendship Jar stamped off the edge and different PTI papers in a banner and circle with a smidge of fabric tape over them. I also added a little bit of lace tape at the top for some texture.

I had no ideas in mind for what I wanted to create for my card when I was making these tags. And I actually haven't even had a chance to play with it until the Sunday prior to posting the challenge.

Sitting at my desk, watching tv I just let myself play. I gravitated immediately to all of the Friendship Jar series of stamps. I die cut and stamped the pint jar on a scrap of grid patterned paper. I used a masking technique to add the "berry lemonade" to it. I also added the strawberry from the newest set and colored it with my Copics. More masking magic to add the polka dot filler to the original jar and some ice cubes. Straws were added to both jars and colored with more Copics. I die cut one of the new Tiny Labels and used a single word from 2 different sentiments to add the wording to it.

Some October Afternoon paper for the background with stitching to match the tag, seam binding in the hole and a little doily peeking out from around the bottom. All in all, this one says summer to me. And with so many dealing with back to school and all it entails, a last little salute to summer seemed in order. Hope you enjoy this. Halloween or Fall Themes

Hi all!! I am up next with hosting the challenge here at the Papertrey Playhouse!! It has been a busy few weeks for me and I was sadly not able to play with the Christmas challenge, but I thought that was a great idea to get a jump start on all of the upcoming holidays!! So since the next big holiday here in the US is halloween, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to start making my halloween gifts for my co-workers!! Here's what I came up with...

Brush the Cobwebs from Your Embellishment Drawer...

Hi there and welcome to another challenge with the Papertrey Playhouse!

If any of you are like me, you have a drawer/box/bag (or two!) full of embellishments. I usually pop in once and a while for rhinestones or pearls but the rest go largely ignored.

I remember when I realized that I preferred to make my own embellishments rather than buy them. I did a massive purge to get rid of so many things!

Still, as a papercrafter, there really are sooo many wonderful embellies that one cannot pass by at the local scrapbooking store.

I decided to challenge myself, and anyone else interested, to use up an embellishment that has been sitting around gathering dust.

The mantra I used for this project was "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue." ;)

That cute little bee embellishment survived my purge and was the inspiration for this card.

Something Old: The sentiment is from Vintage Picnic Sentiments, a stamp set I purchased on one of my first PTI orders. :D

Something New: I defined this as something I hadn't used before. Aside from the bee embellishment, the Picnic Plaid impression plate hadn't seen my Cuttlebug yet.

Something Borrowed: My friend, neighbor and PTI buddy, Stefanie, lent me her Friendship Jar Spring Fillers stamp set.

Something Blue: I used PTI's Blueberry Sky cardstock.

A Thank You Challenge

Hi everyone, sorry I'm late; I don't know where the time goes. This just slipped up on me before I realized...
Anyway, on to the challenge. I recently needed to make quite a few thank you cards to thank the generosity of those that gave my son graduation gifts. As I settled on one particular design, I couldn't make up my mind which color to use, so you know what that means- make an ENTIRE set!
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to make one (or more, if you're feeling froggy) thank you card. You just never know when you're going to need a thank you card....

I hope you get the chance to play along; I know how busy EVERYONE is (me included), and sometimes it's difficult to have some time for yourself.

Rediscover one of your FIRST stamp sets

I came up with this challenge a few days ago! I realized that I hadn't inked up either of the sets from my very FIRST Papertrey Ink order in quite some time and I wanted to get them out and clean off all the dust!! HA!!

So with that the challenge was born: think back to your first PTI order...what did you get? Chose at least one of those stamp sets and break them out again...get them inky again!!

I decided to make a scrapbook page for this challenge, mainly because I have been doing a lot of scrapbooking lately. That was what got me into papercrafting...cardmaking came later, naturally. But I have gotten back to my 'roots' so to speak lately, and I love how easily it is to use PTI products in scrapbooking as well as cardmaking!!

Multi-mats Challenge

I wasn't sure what to call this challenge so I'm naming it the Multi-mats challenge. Grab your dies and layer at least 2 different shapes to create a mat for your focal image. If you don't have PTI dies - well, why not?? LOL - you can use any mat shapes layered together.

Here is my sample:

I used Mat Stack 2 stamps for my focal image and 3 dies - Mat Stack 2, Mat Stack 1 and Mat Stack 5. Paper is Pacific Vineyard. Bottom edge was die cut with a border die from another company - shhhh.

Royal Wedding Card

Hi There!!

This week is a very exciting week here in England. The Royal wedding is this Friday 29th April 2011. Everybody is talking about the wedding and about parties and celebrations.

I thought it would be fun to have our very own Royal Wedding challenge. You can make anything maybe a party favor or card.

I am personally really looking forward to seeing the dress. I am sure that Kate will look amazing!!

(Mostly) Monochromatic Challenge

Today, I'm excited to invite you to participate in a monochromatic challenge. This means that your project should be in various shades of the same color.

As a bonus, it would be wonderful, but not mandatory, for you to use one of the techniques that Papertrey has demonstrated in their Make It Monday series.

Okay, so I DID cheat. Just a little! I couldn't resist adding the Yellow Liquid Pearls right at the end...

So, if you must, you may cheat as well... But just a little! ;)

The techniques that I've used from PREVIOUS Papertrey Make It Mondays are: a) impressing on part of the cardstock (my A7 was too big for the impression plate and so I made it work!), and b) Copic coloring on colored cardstock.

What's Old Is New and Embossing

Hello!! I am here with the next challenge!! I had such a hard time deciding what the challenge should be, that I came up with two!! I remember a few Papertrey Blog Hops ago, we were challenged to ink up a stamp that hadn't seen any ink for a while, and I thought that would be a great challenge to visit again. Then, as my project came together, I found myself doing a lot of heat embossing! So your challenge is to ink up a stamp set that hasn't had much love lately, do some heat embossing, or both!

Here's what I came up with...

I broke out my Turning a New Leaf stamp set for the leaves and my Through The Trees set for the sentiment. I haven't used either in quite some time! And everything is heat embossed using white embossing powder. Then I added some pink gemstones for added interest, and to help break up the gray and white! It just needed some color!! Second Chance Challenge

For most of us the last few months life got hectic and free time got more limited. Now with the holidays behind us and the new year settling in hopefully we're all able to spend some quality time with our stamps, inks, embellishments, papers and more. There were some really good challenges here on our blog and at Papertrey Ink the last couple of months. These challenges got me thinking when it was time for me to post our next challenge here.

And I decided to give all of us a second chance at participating in one of the challenges that we weren't able to play along with the first time. Choose one of the challenges from our blog or the PTI blog hops that were posted between November & February. You've got a second chance to actually MAKE the card you thought about and post it here.

I'm off to decide which one I want a second chance at. I'm kind of torn between the stamped background challenge, the treat container challenge and the scallop challenge. Will have to think if there's a way to do all 3 in one project.........

Color Inspiration Challenge

Hi there! Dana from Aspiring to Creativity here! I'm so excited to put up my first challenge post here at Papertrey Playhouse!

I always find myself inspired by my children's clothing... The colors, the patterns, the textures... I'd love to see what others can come up with for this!

My 1-1/2 yr old daughter with a crazy hair moment.

So the challenge is to use the following colors in a creation:

Orange Zest
Raspberry Fizz
Hibiscus Burst
Dark Chocolate
Spring Moss or Simply Chartreuse (the green in the fabric is a shade exactly between these two colors!)

As a bonus, you could even add buttons and crimped/corrugated paper (the words are made with corduroy fabric).

Sketch challenge

Time for a new challenge and this time around I opted to create a sketch based on a beautiful card by the talented Betsy Veldman. Here is the card I saw on her blog and the sketch follows:

As an "extra" to this challenge, try to incorporate a tag or other small element tucked into the front of the card in a space you create as a pocket. If you look at Betsy's card you will see she has a tag tucked in the card front (tied with a bow at the top).

Here is my card based on the sketch:

I used the Library Ledger papers, On My Couch and addition stamp sets, Ticket die and stamp set and Mat Stack 2 stamps (flourish at the end of the Mat Stack 4 die). The couch was overstamped in brown for detail and a heart button was added as a pillow on the couch. The tickets inside my pocket include little "coupon" messages for my hubby on Valentine's Day.

Challenge #8 - Love

I’m a huge procrastinator and usually wait until the day before I need a card to finally sit down and make one. I’m trying to break that habit this year and since Valentine’s Day is less than a month away I figured I better get busy now.

The challenge this time is to make a Valentine’s Day or love card for someone special in your life but the catch is to not use the usual colors like red and pink.

Can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Creative Backgrounds

Adele here!! It is my turn to do the challenge this week. Its great to be back after such a long break. I can't wait to get back into old routines and maybe some new ones. I don't really make new year's resolutions. But if I did one would be to enjoy and take part in all of the challenges on our blog this year.

This week's challenge is to create a stamped background. This could be using a background stamp or creating your own background with individual stamps.

I have seen so many great examples around. I think there are a few over on Nichole's blog (wink)

A Treat For You

Well, here it is, December 1st! In anticipation of the holiday season I decided to get a bit of a head start and come up with some quick and easy containers to present some small treats in to friends and co-workers. For my container pictured here I used PTI's Favor It Box #2 to die cut some paper from Crate Paper's Snow Day Collection. I added the "joy" die cut to the front of my container, which I found in my stash. The box was finished off with a tag using an image from one of PTI's Holiday Tag sets, layered on top of one of the Limitless Layers dies. Inside are some Lindor truffles and Ghirardelli peppermint bark squares. A fun and inexpensive way to present a small treat to a friend!

Your challenge is to either create a treat container or decorate a pre-made container with your PTI supplies.

By the way, in case you were wondering, the felt poinsettias around my treat bag in the picture above are pins I made with my poinsettia Nestabilities and the largest leaf die from the PTI Delightful Dahlia die set. I used Scarlet Jewel and Simply Chartreuse felt from PTI. The red poinsettias use felt I purchased from my local stamp store. These were super easy to make, and they were so popular my Mom ordered six from me! I plan on packaging the pins in some of the Favor It Box #2 containers and handing them out as early holiday gifts to be enjoyed the whole month.

Just In CASE

Okay, so I'm not very punny, but I'll hope you'll still play along with today's challenge.
I'm Kay, and it's my turn to host the challenge on our fun little blog group.
Since we all got together because of our fondness for Papertrey Ink, and our perhaps bordering on stalker-like love of the PTI design team, I thought it would be fun to CASE one of their cards. Choosing just one was no easy task, though, there are SO many beautiful designs from these talented ladies, and I want to make versions of almost all of them.

Challenge No. 4 - No More Layers!

Hello and welcome to my first ever challenge! I am excited to be hosting this week, and had a lot of ideas rolling around... I had lots of time to come up with something, and kept thinking of all sorts of elaborate schemes... then I was working on my card, and it hit me - THIS is a challenge.

So let's get to it! This week's challenge is to create a card without using any layers. No ribbon, no mattes, no DP adhered to your card base... I added some small rhinestones to mine, and I'll allow it because they required no adhesive, and they are still the same layer as the base, right?

Papertrey Playhouse Challenge #3

Hello Wednesday morning! And welcome to Papertrey Playhouse's third challenge. And the first one I've ever come up with. I have to admit I was starting to get a little stressed out about it. Would it be interesting? Would anyone want to play along? And so on.

One of the best things I know to do when I start getting stuck is to go look for inspiration. So that's what I did. I started on Nichole's blog and saw all of the amazing morning after cards she posted. Then I went to the various new release galleries. And somehow looking at all of the beautiful cards it came on me.

So, for our third challenge I'd like to see your PTI creations that feature tags. Big ones. Small ones. Round ones. Fancy shaped ones. Any kind of tag you like. Just make sure there's a tag on your card. As an added twist your card should be inspired by one of the PTI Design Team.

Here's the one I did. I channeled Mish, grabbed up some scraps - literally, all pieces of this card are scraps. You can read the details about it on my blog if you like - and started playing with them.

You've got two weeks to play along and post your card. And just think, you're Oct new release goodies will likely arrive in time for you to use them for this challenge. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Challenge #2 - Pop Of Color

Hello everyone and welcome to the second challenge at the Papertrey Playhouse!! I am so excited to be hosting this challenge and I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!!

I am often inspired by color combinations found in photography throughout blog-land, and that is where I came up with the inspiration for this challenge. To play along all you have to do is use Black and White with a Pop of Color. I chose pink, but I didn't want to limit anyone who didn't LOVE pink like I do, to use it. So the color choice is yours. Welcome to the 1st Papertrey Playhouse challenge! If you are new to our blog, we are a group of people who met at the Papertrey Ink forums and joined together to share our love of all things Papertrey! We would love to have you play along with our challenges using products from PTI.

This challenge is an easy one. All you have to do to play along is use felt somewhere on your project. If you want to up your game, include a bow too! But the main requirement is felt (if you don't have felt from PTI, that's ok - any felt will do!) Here's a sample to share with you:
